In the Landscape

Bougainvillea became a staple in tropical and subtropical landscaping worldwide but was discovered first in South America.  In the 20th century it was introduced In the United States with California and Florida leading the way.

Description

Bougainvillea is a colorful, tropical-looking flowering plant known for its bright papery bracts in shades of pink, purple, red, orange, white, and yellow.  Here in Colorado, it is only an annual flower, but many people love them for the hot summer months vining up a trellis on their patios.  The hotter the better for this annual!

The blooming feature are the colorful “flowers” called bracts; the true flowers are small and usually white.

Quick facts
  • Type: Woody vine or shrub
  • Best climate: Warm, sunny areas; usually thrives in Zones 9–11, very drought tolerant
  • Sunlight: Needs full sun for the best blooms
  • Watering: Avoid overwatering, let the soil dry between waterings.
  • Soil: Well-draining soil is important
  • Growth habit: Can climb walls, fences, trellises, or be pruned as a shrub/container plant
Care tips
  • Give it at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
  • Use a pot with good drainage if growing in a container.
  • Prune after blooming to shape it and encourage new growth.
  • Fertilize regularly.
  • Here in Colorado at the end of the summer, you can bring it indoors and continue to grow as a houseplant.  It will need a bright sunny location inside.
