Summer Pollinators
Agastache – this variety is an annual but still has that classic hyssop appeal. Fragrant foliage with colorful flowers in the mint family. Perfect for attracting hummingbirds, butterflies and flouishing in the hot summer days.
Cuphea – also referred to as the ‘cigar plant’. Creek Side Gardens number one recommended plant for attracting hummingbirds. If you do not like hummingbirds visiting your garden and patio – do not plant Cuphea. Hummingbirds LOVE this plant.
Lantana – a butterfly haven and that thrives in hot sun. You will be surprised to find hummingbirds love it too. The hotter the better for this low-maintenance plant. Great planted in combination with cuphea.
Shade Summer Color
Coleus – a showy non-flowering annual. Planted for it’s stunning foliage color. Great for shade but all the newer varieties perform well in the sun as well.
Begonia – Many, many different varieties and types of begonia. Creek Sides ‘Big’ Begonia grows upright with glossy green leaves and bright red flowers. Very versatile, likes shade but also ok with some morning sun. Stunning all by itself or mixes well with other shade plants.
New Guinea Impatien – A compliment to your Begonia or Coleus, they do well in mostly shady areas but will tolerate a little more sun than a traditional impatien.
Morning Sun Summer Color
Dahlia – Colorful and bright, will thrive in morning sun, but prefers a little shade later in the day. They are related to daisies and sunflowers.
Angelonia – Not found too often in the springtime because they really don’t takeoff until the temperatures warm up. Can take the heat but would appreciate a cool down in the afternoon. Sometimes called the summer snapdragon.
Full Sun Summer Color
Marigold – this easy to grow summer standby for colorful gardens that attracts pollinators and deters harmful pests. Native to the Americas they thrive in full sun.
Phlox – this annual variety is very colorful with a mound of flowers that will cascade over the edge of a container. Great in the full sun.
Celosia – unique feathery flower plumes in a variety of colors. Heat loving for full sun. Good thriller option for the center of your container design.
Salvia – Another large group of garden plants that are particularly attractive to pollinators. Red or white Salvia available, tall and strong, makes a good center ‘thriller’.
SunPatiens – these look just like New Guinea Impatiens, but don’t be fooled, these can thrive in full sun.
Vinca – not the vine but a delicate flower known as Madagascar periwinkle. This too can thrive in hot sun. Glossy leaves and unique flower colors.
Zinnia – Tried and true annual. Great for hot sun in pots or in ground. Choose from 3 colors.
