Vegetable varieties – what is tried and true and what is something new to explore. Get outside your comfort zone and branch into varieties you may not have tried.
Tomatoes
- What is an heirloom? An heirloom tomato is an old variety that has not been hybridized.
- What does determinate and indeterminate mean? A determinate variety means that it will grow to it’s ‘determined’ height. Indeterminate means that the plant will grow continuously.
- CHECK OUT THE CSG VARIETIES LISTED BELOW.
Try something different; Sungold, Ace, Sweetie
- Tomatoes fall into different categories (slicer, grape, cherry, etc.)
Other vegetables to try
- Can’t find a regular Jalapeno pepper? Try the Megatron Jalapeno or a Shishito
- Pumpkins are fun for kids. Jack Be Little pumpkins are small and grow prolifically.
- Cucumbers – try the Telegraph (English Cucumber) or a Gherkin.
These are just a few ideas. To get your creative juices flowing.
Fruits
- Make these a staple in your food garden. Raspberries grow the best here in Colorado. Blueberries can grow but require more acid soil and fertilizer to make them successful. Best in containers.
- Try something different; Gooseberries and Goji berries – tart berries.
Small spaces
- Compact varieties such as patio tomatoes, and bush bean varieties.
- Hanging baskets with Topsy Tom Tomatoes or Strawberries grow great
Herbs
- Experiment with blending (teas, medicinal, etc) Chamomile, Lavendar
- Grow Mint in containers for containment
- Insect Control – Lemon Balm, Citronella Geraniums, make your own.
Cool Crops
- Perfect for early spring planting, cool days and cool night these varieties will thrive. Start plants or direct sow.
- Try something new, Easter Egg Blend Radishes, Carnival Carrots, Lettuce salad blends, etc.
- Seed Potatoes, garlic and onions – have you ever tried them?
