You may think that in the downtime of January, the Creek Side Green Team team is off on a beach somewhere, but we are hard at work to ensure a successful growing season for our gardeners!
This week the Creek Side team unloaded over 8000 perennials to begin our growing season (with more to come)! Small starter plants called “plugs” will be planted into quart sized pots, to be Grown Fresh especially for you this spring. Among all your favorite perennials, we will also be growing some unique and some new perennial varieties. Here are a few that we are excited about:
“Kannah Creek” Buckwheat – Eriogonum umbellatum
This mid-size perennial (12-16’’) is a staff favorite at Creek Side Gardens. Not only does this Plant Select variety have beautiful yellow flowers from May to July, but it also boasts beautiful fall color as the leaves turn red in the fall. A must have in your xeric gardens.
“Smoky Hills” Skullcap – Scutellaria resinosa
Another Plant Select perennial native to the smoky hills of Kansas, this is a “tidy” mounding perennial with blue to purple flowers that blooms in early summer. This full sun perennial is deer resistant and tolerates low water.
“Wicked” Coneflower – Echinacea sp.
A full sun perennial that checks many Colorado gardeners’ boxes:
- Deer resistant
- Beneficial to pollinators
- Feeds the birds
- Low water needs
Consider this bright pink blooming coneflower for late summer to early fall color. Enjoy the blooms as a cut flower or see the beauty of the seed heads in winter.
Proven Winner Perennials
Many gardeners are familiar with the Proven Winner brand and their premium quality plants. This season Creek Side is expanding the list of Proven Winner perennials that we will be growing and offering. Keep your eye out for new varieties of Coral Bells, Bleeding Hearts, Bell Flowers, Penstemon, Rudbeckia, Baptisia and more!
