Raised Beds & Small Space Gardens

‘THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX’ – OR RATHER… IN THE BOX.

RAISED BEDS

Raised bed gardening, or container gardening is a growing trend.  People are using more and more horse troughs, whiskey barrels or even an old tub to create a raised garden that is fully contained.  This season at Creek Side Gardens we have some raised bed kits that would be a perfect addition to your space.

Metal Raised Bed w/stand – for the gardener who has trouble getting down on the ground or leaning over.  This bed is at standing height, has a liner, and a useful shelf for all your garden tools. Another perfect standing height raised bed is a horse water trough. Make a stunning wildflower garden in your trough for all to envy.

Cedar 3-Tier Stair Step Garden Bed – 48” wide and 48” deep, this tiered bed would be great for vegetables or herbs.  Saving space, it can sit flush against a wall.

6 in 1 Small Garden Bed  – this raised bed can be built in six different configurations perfect for adapting to your space.

Whiskey Barrels – original oak Jack Daniels barrel. Use a line of them as a raised vegetable garden, each containing is own variety.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER IN SMALL SPACES OR RAISED BED GARDENS

Scan your environment, how you can utilize your rooftop, balcony, deck, or porch. That ‘dead’ side yard next to the garage could be perfect for narrow raised beds.

  • Know your micro-climates – Townhouses, for example, often have indirect light ‘in between’ houses. West facing balconies or yards will absorb the hottest part of the day. Choose your plants accordingly based on the climate and exposures you have.  (Source: Sunset Magazine, November 2002).
  • Vertical Gardening – when you can’t grow out – grow up! One of the best ways to maximize your space is growing vertically. There are several benefits to growing vertically, including:
  • increased yield
  • better pest management
  • visual interest
  • create privacy!
  • Ease of harvesting
