What Do You Mean?

A great gift to both give and receive is a houseplant.  Houseplants are beautiful, lush, lively and almost universally adored. When choosing a gift, we can be tempted to choose plants that are striking or exotic or blooming. We can take it a step further and hunt for a houseplant which conveys symbolism and sentiment for the intended recipient.

Aglaonema

The Aglaonema, or Chinese evergreen, is thought to be a harbinger of good fortune and prosperity. Colors can range from dark green to even some pinks and reds. Most Chinese evergreens prefer medium to low light, need to be watered when the top two inches of soil are dry, and are considered easy to grow.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is thought to contribute to a home’s wellbeing. Aloe promotes healing, protection and renewal with its medicinal uses and conveys a theme of rejuvenation. Aloes prefer bright light, need to be watered only when the soil dries out completely, and are considered easy to grow.

Philodendron

Philodendron literally means phileo (love) and dendron (tree), or tree hugger! The name came about as these plants tend to vine and climb. The most common philodendrons have beautiful heart shaped leaves, but several varieties have more unique shapes. Philos prefer medium to bright indirect light, need to be watered when the top inch of soil is dry, and are considered easy to grow.

Pothos

Pothos embody resilience and endurance as they are infamous for surviving when faced with neglect. Pothos also represent prosperity and abundance with their ability to thrive in both the best and worst of conditions. The traditional golden and jade pothos are perennial favorites while the variegated varieties of the pothos are exquisite. Pothos prefer a wide variety of light, need to be watered when the top two inches of soil are dry and are considered easy to grow.

Sansevieria

The Sansevieria, or snake plant, is thought to protect against evil spirits and negative energy. The foliage is striking and upright. The snake plant prefers medium to bright indirect light (though may tolerate lower light), needs to be watered only when the soil dries out completely, and is considered easy to grow.

Any houseplant will add vibrancy, love and character to a recipient’s space. This list is far from exhaustive, but a good place to start with easy to care for plants. Have some fun and maybe get one for you, too!
